On September 18, 2025, Jacksonville Area Legal Aid (JALA) will proudly host best-selling author and economic justice advocate Stephanie Land as the keynote speaker for their 23rd Equal Justice Awards Celebration. The event will take place at the Jacksonville Public Library, highlighting the importance of equal justice within the community.
Stephanie Land, known for her impactful memoir "Maid: Hard Work, Low Pay, and a Mother’s Will to Survive," reflects her own struggles as a single mother overcoming the challenges of poverty. Her story not only attracted acclaim and inspired the popular Netflix series but also advocates for the recognition of the issues faced by domestic workers and low-income families across the nation. As she addresses the audience, Land will shed light on the brutal realities of economic hardship and the fierce commitment of parents striving for a better life for their children.
Highlighting the Jacksonville Eviction Diversion Program
At the Equal Justice Awards, JALA will also honor the Jacksonville Eviction Diversion Program with the prestigious Robert J. Beckham Equal Justice Award. This initiative, launched in early 2024, focuses on preventing evictions and promoting housing stability, embodying a collaborative effort between local organizations, including the City of Jacksonville and United Way of Northeast Florida.
Jim Kowalski, JALA's President & CEO, praised the program's significant outcomes, noting that 83 percent of families receiving assistance have remained housed six months after intervention. This program not only seeks to reduce evictions but to ensure long-term stability for tenants, reinforcing the need for effective community support in housing matters.
